The hallway door in my house used to announce every trip to the bathroom. Somewhere around six in the morning it would let out a long dry groan that carried into both bedrooms, and for most of a year I did what most people do about it, which is nothing. Then one Saturday I fixed it in about eight minutes with a screwdriver, a rag, and a can of spray lubricant that had been sitting on a garage shelf since I moved in. The door has been quiet ever since.
Squeaky doors are the easiest repair in the house to postpone and one of the easiest to actually finish. The noise almost never means anything is broken. It means two pieces of metal are rubbing with nothing between them, or a door has shifted enough that it drags where it used to swing free. Both have short fixes.
Start with the hinge pin, not the oil can
The instinct is to spray lubricant into the hinge from the side and hope it works its way in. Sometimes it does. More often it runs down the door frame, collects dust, and the squeak returns in a few weeks looking worse than before, with a grey streak under the hinge to prove it.
The better move takes one extra minute. Open the door partway and prop it so it holds its own weight, either with a shim under the outside corner or with a folded towel. Then look at the top of each hinge. You will see a pin with a rounded head sitting in the barrel. Tap the bottom tip of that pin upward with a screwdriver and a hammer, and it will slide out. Do one hinge at a time. The door stays hanging on the others while you work.
With the pin in your hand you can see what is actually going on. Most pins that squeak are dry and slightly rough, and some are lightly rusted. Wipe the pin down with a rag, hit it with lubricant, wipe again so it is coated but not dripping, and slide it back in. Tap it down until the head seats. Move to the next hinge. Swing the door a few times when you are done and the sound should be gone.
What I use, and what I stopped using
A thin penetrating spray is fine for getting into a hinge you cannot remove, but on a pin I can hold, I prefer a grease that stays put. White lithium grease works. So does petroleum jelly, which sounds improvised but is genuinely good for this, because it does not run and it does not evaporate. A fingertip of it wiped along the pin lasts far longer than a spray does.
Things I have tried and would skip:
- Cooking oil. It quiets the door for a week and then goes sticky and slightly rancid. I learned this in my first apartment and could smell the hinge on humid days.
- Anything sprayed while the door is closed. The lubricant lands on the frame and the paint, not inside the barrel.
- Soap or candle wax on the pin. It works for a day. The friction grinds it right off.
Keep a rag under the hinge while you work. Whatever you spray will find the floor otherwise, and a lubricant stain on a wood floor takes more effort to remove than the original repair took.
The noise that is not the hinge at all
If you have greased every pin and the door still makes noise, listen to when it happens. That timing tells you which fix you need.
Noise at the very end of the swing
A chirp or click right as the door closes is usually the latch bolt scraping the strike plate, which is the metal plate set into the frame. Rub a pencil on the angled face of the latch bolt, then close the door a few times and look at the plate. The graphite mark shows exactly where it is hitting. Graphite is also a dry lubricant, so sometimes the pencil alone solves it. If the mark is high or low on the plate, the door has settled and the plate needs to move a little, which I cover in the next section.
Noise in the middle of the swing
A rubbing or scuffing sound partway through the arc usually means the door edge is touching the frame or the door bottom is dragging on carpet or a threshold. Run a piece of paper around the gap between the door and the frame with the door almost closed. Where the paper will not slide through, that is your contact point.
Noise as soon as it starts to move
That first groan on a door that has been shut all night is a classic dry hinge, and the pin fix handles it.
Doors that shifted instead of squeaked
Houses move. The one I live in was built in the seventies, and two of its interior doors do not sit the way they did when they were hung. When a door drags, the fastest thing to check is the top hinge screws. The top hinge carries the most load, and its screws work loose over the years, letting the door sag toward the latch side.
Open the door, hold it steady, and tighten every screw in the top hinge with a hand screwdriver. Not a drill. A drill strips these fast and you will not feel the moment the screw stops biting. If a screw spins forever without tightening, the hole is worn out. The old trick is the good one here: back the screw out, push a few wooden toothpicks or a thin sliver of wood into the hole with a little wood glue, break them off flush, let the glue set, then drive the screw back in. It grabs fresh wood and holds.
If tightening does not lift the door enough, replace one screw in the top hinge with a longer one that reaches past the door frame into the framing behind it. That single screw pulls the whole frame back toward the structure and can take a stubborn drag out of a door in one turn. It is the fix I use most often and it almost never fails.
Moving a strike plate without ruining the frame
If your pencil test showed the latch hitting above or below the hole, you have two options. The gentle one is to file the opening in the strike plate slightly in the direction you need. A small metal file, a few strokes, test, repeat. The plate ends up with a wider mouth and the latch drops in.
The other option is to unscrew the plate and move it. That leaves the old screw holes exposed, so use the toothpick and glue trick on them first, then drill small pilot holes in the new spots. Moving a plate more than a small amount usually means chiseling the recess wider, and at that point I stop and ask whether the door itself needs to be rehung instead.
My rule of thumb: if the fix takes more than one afternoon and involves a chisel, the problem was never the strike plate.
Where I stop and call someone
Interior doors, closet doors, and cabinet doors are all fair game for anyone with a screwdriver. There are three situations where I hand it off.
- Exterior doors that will not latch. A door that does not seal is a security and weather problem, and the fix often involves the frame, the threshold, or the deadbolt alignment together. A good carpenter sorts this out in one visit.
- Fire doors, including the door between an attached garage and the house in many homes. These are rated assemblies and the closer, the seals, and the hardware are part of the rating. Do not modify them casually.
- Any door where the frame itself looks out of square, with a gap that goes from tight at the top to wide at the bottom. That is usually a framing or settling issue and it will not be solved with a longer screw.
A ten minute round for the whole house
Once a year, usually when the weather turns and the doors start behaving differently, I do a lap. I carry a screwdriver, a rag, a tub of petroleum jelly, and a pencil, and I open and close every interior door in the house. Anything that groans gets a pin pulled and greased. Anything that clicks gets the pencil test. Anything that drags gets its top hinge screws snugged.
The whole lap takes about twenty minutes for eight doors, and it is one of the few maintenance tasks with an immediate, obvious payoff. You hear the difference the same day. That is rare in home repair, where most good work is invisible, and it is the reason this is the first job I hand to anyone who says they are not handy. Pull one pin, wipe it, put it back. You have now fixed something.
