Our hallway bathroom has no window and a fan that I assumed was doing its job because it made noise. It was not. The ceiling near the shower had a faint gray bloom, the paint above the door had started to lift at one corner, and the whole room smelled slightly of damp laundry an hour after anyone showered. Noise is not airflow, and that was the thing I had wrong for about three years.

Do this first: hold a square of toilet paper up to the running fan and let go. If the fan holds it flat against the grille, air is moving. If it flutters and falls, the fan is spinning and moving almost nothing, and everything else you do about bathroom moisture is working against that.

Check the fan before you buy a dehumidifier

A weak fan usually has an ordinary cause. Mine had two. The grille was packed with lint and dust to the point that the slots were half closed, and the flexible duct in the attic had sagged into a low loop where condensation collected. Cleaning the grille is a ten minute job with the power off at the breaker, a vacuum, and warm soapy water in the sink for the plastic cover.

While the cover is down, look at the fan housing itself. Dust builds on the blade and inside the box, and a stiff brush plus the vacuum nozzle gets most of it. Let the cover dry completely before it goes back up, because a wet grille in a humid room collects dust faster.

The duct is the part worth having someone look at if you cannot get to it safely. A duct that sags, that is crushed, or that vents into the attic rather than outside will keep a bathroom damp no matter how good the fan is, and it moves the moisture problem into the roof structure where you will not see it until it is expensive.

Run it longer than the shower

The habit change that made the biggest difference here cost nothing. The fan goes on before the water does and stays on for twenty minutes after the last person is out. Most of the moisture leaves the room during that window, not during the shower itself, and flipping the switch off on the way out the door is why the room never dried.

We use a timer switch now, the kind with buttons for set intervals. I press the twenty and forget about it. Before that we forgot roughly half the time, which meant half of our showers ended with a room full of held moisture and a mirror that stayed fogged for an hour.

Give the air somewhere to come from

A fan can only exhaust what it can replace. If the bathroom door is shut tight against a threshold with no gap, the fan is pulling against a sealed box and its actual airflow drops. Most bathroom doors are cut with a gap at the bottom for exactly this reason. Ours had been fitted with a draft stopper by a previous owner, which somebody had meant kindly and which was quietly strangling the fan.

Leaving the door open a few inches after a shower does the same thing if your door has no gap. In a house with a window in the bathroom, cracking the window for those same twenty minutes works even better in mild weather, though in cold months an open window can push condensation onto the coldest surfaces, so the fan is the more reliable tool.

Deal with the wet surfaces, not just the air

Airflow handles the room. The water sitting on things is a separate job, and it is where mildew actually starts.

  • Squeegee the shower walls and door. Thirty seconds while you are still standing there, and it removes most of the water that would otherwise evaporate into the room and then land on the ceiling.
  • Spread the shower curtain full width. A curtain bunched at one end holds folds of water for hours. Pulling it closed is what dries it.
  • Hang bath mats over something. A mat left flat on the floor stays wet all day and puts moisture into the flooring underneath. Ours goes over the tub edge after the last shower.
  • Wipe the window sill and the mirror frame. These are cold surfaces where condensation lands first, and the frame joints are where paint gives up first.

Look at the ceiling above the shower once a month with a flashlight held flat against it. Raking light shows the beginning of a problem long before you would notice it standing under the room light.

Storage choices matter more than people expect

Damp rooms are hard on stored things, and stored things make a damp room worse by blocking air. I stopped keeping paper products in bulk, cardboard boxes, and stacks of spare towels in that bathroom. Cardboard in particular absorbs and holds moisture, and a soft box on a cabinet floor is often the first sign of a slow leak that nobody has noticed yet.

What stayed is the daily use items, on shelves with a little air around them rather than packed edge to edge. When I reset the under sink cabinet I put a pale tray on the cabinet floor, and that tray has told me twice about small drips that would otherwise have soaked into the base unseen.

What actually fixed ours

In order of how much difference it made: cleaning the fan grille and housing, running the fan on a timer for twenty minutes after every shower, removing the draft stopper from the door, squeegeeing the shower, and hanging the bath mat instead of leaving it down. The gray bloom on the ceiling has not come back, and the lifted paint above the door got scraped, primed, and repainted last summer once the room was actually dry enough for paint to stick.

None of that was a purchase beyond a timer switch and a can of primer. The room was not badly built. It was being run in a way that kept water in it, and the fix was a fan that moves air and a handful of small habits at the end of a shower.
